Artist Talk: Adrian Armstrong and Phillip Townsend
As the new academic year kicks off on college campuses across the US, AGBS is looking back to our Spring 2021 exhibition with new eyes, which featured artwork by Austin-based artist Adrian Armstrong. In this artist talk hosted by the Art Galleries at Black Studies, the show's curator, Phillip Townsend, virtually sat down with the artist to discuss Armstrong's artistic practice and visual inspirations. Armstrong also shares his thoughts on what it means to be a Black artist creating work during a time of social and political unrest, and why he emphasizes joy and vibrancy in his depictions of Black life.
“The main thing I really want people to take away from this is that, and I say this directly to the Black audience: find moments of joy. Whenever you go to this show, or look at it online, or however you’re going to consume it, like really just think about moments of joy, things that make you happy. And look at your peers with new eyes.” - Adrian Armstrong
